Vision for Art
At Kempshott Junior School, we inspire pupils to become confident, creative and reflective artists. Through our Art and Design curriculum, children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to express themselves through a wide range of artistic experiences.
Pupils learn drawing, painting, sculpture, craft, mixed media and digital art, building their knowledge and skills progressively as they move through the school. They explore different materials and techniques, develop and refine their ideas, and learn how to evaluate and improve their work.
Children study a diverse range of artists, craftspeople and designers from different cultures and periods of history. This helps them understand how art can communicate ideas, tell stories and reflect the world around us. They also learn to discuss and evaluate artwork using increasingly sophisticated artistic vocabulary.
We encourage creativity, curiosity and individuality, ensuring that every child can access and enjoy the full Art curriculum. Through carefully sequenced learning and regular opportunities to revisit and apply their knowledge, pupils develop confidence and success as artists.
By the time pupils leave Kempshott, they have developed creativity, technical skill and an appreciation of the arts. They leave with the confidence to express themselves, think imaginatively and understand the important role that art and design play in the wider world.
Our Curriculum
The long-term curriculum overview shows the Art and Design units children study in each year group. Our progression document explains how pupils build on their previous learning, developing their artistic knowledge, understanding and techniques as they move through Key Stage 2.
What Children Learn
Select a year group to explore the units and knowledge organisers.
Year 3
Developing drawing skills - We will develop our shading skills and drawing techniques to create a botanical-inspired digital drawing.
Exploring texture with paint and collage - We will create textures with paint and explore collage through the work of Romare Bearden.
Mega materials - We will explore how different materials can be shaped and joined and learn about the techniques used by artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Sokari Douglas-Camp to create our own structures.
Year 4
Fabric of nature – Using the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforests as a starting point, we will develop our drawings through experimentation and textile-based techniques to design a repeating pattern suitable for fabric.
Exploring tone, texture and proportion – We will explore tone, texture and proportion to create realistic and expressive drawings, inspired by artists such as Sarah Graham, Nicola McBride and Beatriz Milhazes.
Light and dark – We will investigate the use of tone in art through studying how artists use highlights, midtones and shadows to create the illusion of form.
Year 5
Depth, emotion and movement - We will investigate how drawing can express emotion, movement and depth, inspired by the work of Charlie Mackesy and Elizabeth Calett.
Expressive portraits - We will explore how artists use self-portraits to communicate identity and will experiment with words, symbolism and expressive painting and monoprinting in order to create a final mixed-media self-portrait.
Making memories - We will create a personal memory box using a collection of found objects and hand-sculptured forms which will reflect primary school life with symbolic and personal meaning.
Year 6
Expressing ideas - We will learn how drawing can be used to express ideas and messages, inspired by a range of street artists and environmental themes.
World in watercolour - We will explore how artists use watercolour and will develop watercolour techniques through sketchbook studies. We will apply these skills in an abstract final painting.
Photo opportunity - We will develop our photography skills and techniques to design a range of creative photographic outcomes.
