Our Religious Education curriculum, underpinned by the Hampshire Living Difference IV syllabus, is ambitious, coherent and knowledge-rich, enabling all pupils to achieve highly and to develop as confident, reflective individuals. It provides a carefully planned sequence of learning that ensures children acquire and retain essential knowledge over time, with each unit building incrementally on what has been taught before so that pupils know more and remember more.

We intend for pupils to develop secure substantive knowledge of a range of religions and worldviews, alongside a strong understanding of the disciplinary approaches used in RE. Pupils are taught not only what people believe, value and practise, but also how religious and non-religious ideas are studied, interpreted and evaluated. Through this balanced approach, pupils are enabled to make sense of complex concepts, ask thoughtful questions and develop informed responses.

New learning is deliberately connected to prior knowledge, allowing pupils to deepen and strengthen their understanding as they progress through the curriculum. Regular opportunities are built in for pupils to revisit key ideas, vocabulary and concepts, enabling long-term retention and meaningful retrieval. This cumulative design supports increasingly sophisticated and independent thinking and helps pupils apply their learning with greater confidence.

Reading, writing and spoken language are prioritised so that pupils can access rich and increasingly complex content. Pupils are given opportunities to read a wide range of texts, discuss ideas with clarity and precision, and communicate their understanding in well-structured written forms. These literacy skills are embedded within meaningful contexts, supporting both subject knowledge and wider curriculum success.

Our RE lessons are designed to promote curiosity, engagement and a positive attitude towards learning. Pupils are encouraged to wonder, question and explore, developing confidence in expressing their views and taking pride in their achievements. The curriculum reflects a ‘windows and mirrors’ approach, enabling pupils to encounter perspectives that broaden their understanding of others while also seeing their own experiences, identities and beliefs valued within the subject.

Inclusive practice is central to our intent. Teaching is responsive and adaptive, with careful consideration given to removing barriers so that all pupils can access the ambitious curriculum and experience success. We aim to ensure that every child, regardless of starting point, is supported to engage fully and achieve well.

Ultimately, our RE curriculum develops secure knowledge, strong academic outcomes and the ability to apply their understanding thoughtfully in a range of contexts
