At Kempshott Junior School, our mathematics curriculum is ambitious, coherent and inclusive, enabling all pupils to develop as confident and successful mathematicians. We aim for all children to secure deep understanding, fluency and the ability to reason and solve problems, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed for the next stage of their education and beyond.
Our curriculum is carefully structured to ensure that pupils build secure foundational knowledge in key areas such as number, place value and calculation, alongside fractions, decimals and percentages. Through a well-sequenced approach, concepts are introduced in small, logical steps and revisited over time to support long-term retention and understanding. We recognise the importance of ensuring that all pupils, particularly those who find mathematics more challenging, are supported to secure understanding before moving on, using approaches informed by HIAS and NCETM planning.
Mathematics is taught as a distinct subject, where pupils develop subject-specific skills through reasoning, fluency and problem solving. Lessons are designed to promote connections between concepts, enabling pupils to identify patterns, make links and explain their thinking using precise mathematical vocabulary. This is strengthened through the use of sentence stems and vocabulary development to support all learners in articulating their understanding.
Our curriculum is underpinned by a mastery approach in which all pupils are given access to challenging mathematics with appropriate support. Adaptive teaching, including scaffolds, representations and the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract models, ensures that barriers are removed without lowering expectations. We continue to refine the consistent use of these strategies so that all pupils can engage deeply and achieve mastery.
Opportunities for fluency are prioritised through daily arithmetic practice, ensuring that key skills are embedded and readily applied. Alongside this, pupils are encouraged to engage in meaningful reasoning and problem-solving tasks. Well-structured, open-ended questions are used to promote deeper thinking, ensuring pupils have genuine opportunities to explore, justify and generalise rather than simply complete tasks.
Mathematics is meaningfully applied across the wider curriculum, enabling pupils to see its relevance in real-life contexts. Pupils use mathematical skills in subjects such as science, geography, computing, PE and design technology, applying their understanding of measurement, data, number and scale in purposeful ways.
Our curriculum reflects a ‘windows and mirrors’ approach, where problems are rooted in a range of contexts that reflect pupils’ own experiences while also exposing them to unfamiliar situations. This helps to ensure that mathematics is both relatable and engaging, while also broadening pupils’ understanding of the world.
We are committed to continuous improvement in our mathematics provision. Through collaboration, careful planning and ongoing refinement of practice, we ensure that the curriculum supports all pupils to deepen their understanding, develop resilience and become confident, independent mathematicians who can apply their knowledge fluently, reason mathematically and solve increasingly complex problems.
