Pupil Premium
What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is additional funding provided by the government to help schools improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils. It is intended to ensure that all children, regardless of their background or circumstances, have the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
At Kempshott Junior School, we are committed to ensuring that every child receives the support they need to succeed. We use Pupil Premium funding to help overcome barriers to learning, improve attainment and progress, and provide opportunities for pupils to develop academically, socially and emotionally.
Who is eligible for Pupil Premium?
Schools receive Pupil Premium funding for pupils who meet certain criteria, including:
-
Children who are eligible for targeted free school meals or have been eligible within the last six years.
-
Children who have previously been looked after by a local authority, including those adopted from care.
-
Children who are currently looked after by a local authority, for whom funding is managed by the local authority.
Additional Service Pupil Premium funding is available to support children from eligible armed forces families, particularly with their pastoral needs.
How do we use Pupil Premium funding?
At Kempshott Junior School, our approach is based on understanding the individual needs of our pupils and using evidence-informed strategies to help them succeed.
We follow the Education Endowment Foundation's recommended three-tiered approach:
High-quality teaching
Ensuring that all pupils benefit from effective classroom teaching, a carefully planned curriculum and appropriate support to meet their learning needs.
Targeted academic support
Providing additional teaching and interventions for pupils who need extra help to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence, particularly in reading, writing and mathematics.
Wider strategies
Supporting pupils' attendance, wellbeing and readiness to learn, alongside helping them access the wider opportunities and experiences available at school.
We regularly review pupils' progress and evaluate the impact of the support provided to ensure that funding is used effectively.
Free School Meals – Could your child be eligible?
From September 2026, free school meal eligibility has expanded to include all children whose families receive Universal Credit, regardless of household earnings.
There are now two categories of free school meal eligibility:
-
Targeted Free School Meals: For families meeting the existing means-tested eligibility criteria. These pupils may also qualify for Pupil Premium funding.
-
Expanded Free School Meals: For additional families receiving Universal Credit who do not meet the targeted criteria. These pupils are entitled to free school meals, but new eligibility under the expanded criteria does not automatically generate Pupil Premium funding.
Children who previously qualified for targeted free school meals can continue to attract Pupil Premium funding under the six-year eligibility arrangements, even if their circumstances change.
We encourage all families who think they may be eligible to apply.
