Teaching with Pride, Learning with Confidence

British Values

Promoting British Values at Kempshott Junior School

At Kempshott Junior School, we aim to prepare our pupils to become confident, responsible and respectful members of society. We actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

These values are woven into everyday school life through our curriculum, assemblies, relationships and the opportunities we provide for pupils to take responsibility and contribute to our school community.

We encourage children to understand their rights and responsibilities, respect differences, make informed choices and appreciate the importance of living and working together.

How do we promote British Values?

Democracy

We encourage pupils to recognise that everyone has a voice and that their views can make a difference.

At Kempshott, pupils experience democracy through:

  • Electing representatives to our School Council.

  • Sharing their views through pupil questionnaires, discussions and pupil voice activities.

  • Taking part in discussions and debates, learning to listen to different opinions and explain their own.

  • Learning about democracy and how decisions are made through subjects such as history and PSHE.

These opportunities help children understand the importance of having a say, listening to others and respecting decisions made fairly.

The Rule of Law

We help pupils understand why rules and laws are important in keeping people safe, protecting their rights and ensuring that everyone is treated fairly.

At Kempshott, we promote this through:

  • Clear school expectations that help create a safe, positive learning environment.

  • Classroom discussions about fairness, rights and responsibilities.

  • Helping pupils recognise the consequences of their choices and take responsibility for their behaviour.

  • Assemblies and curriculum learning that explore right and wrong, fairness and the importance of laws in society.

We encourage children to understand the reasons behind rules, rather than simply following them.

Individual Liberty

We encourage pupils to develop confidence, independence and the ability to make responsible choices, while respecting the rights of others.

At Kempshott, pupils are supported to:

  • Make choices about their learning and take increasing responsibility for their actions.

  • Develop leadership skills through roles such as head pupils, house captains, kindness champions and school monitors.

  • Explore their interests through extracurricular clubs, sporting activities and wider school opportunities.

  • Understand how to stay safe and make informed decisions, including when using the internet, through PSHE and online safety education.

We want children to feel confident expressing their views, understanding their rights and making safe, responsible choices.

Mutual Respect

Respect is central to the positive relationships we aim to develop throughout our school community.

At Kempshott, we encourage pupils to:

  • Treat others with kindness, consideration and respect.

  • Listen to different points of view and learn how to disagree respectfully.

  • Appreciate the contributions, achievements and experiences of others.

  • Recognise and challenge bullying, prejudice and discrimination.

Through our curriculum, assemblies and daily interactions, pupils learn that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with dignity.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We help pupils develop an understanding and appreciation of the different religions, beliefs, cultures and traditions that make up modern Britain.

At Kempshott, we promote this through:

  • Our Religious Education curriculum, which introduces pupils to different religions and worldviews.

  • PSHE lessons that explore identity, diversity, relationships and respect for others.

  • Assemblies and learning opportunities that help pupils understand different cultures, traditions and beliefs.

  • Encouraging children to ask thoughtful questions, challenge stereotypes and recognise that people may hold different beliefs and opinions.

We aim to develop pupils' understanding of others and help them recognise that differences should be respected and valued.

Preparing Pupils for Life Beyond Kempshott

Promoting British values is an important part of our wider commitment to pupils' personal development. Through everyday experiences, our curriculum and the opportunities available to them, we aim to help children develop the knowledge, confidence and attitudes they need to make a positive contribution to their communities.

We want pupils to leave Kempshott Junior School with a strong sense of fairness, responsibility and respect for others, ready for the next stage of their education and life in modern Britain.
