At Kempshott Junior School, our Physical Education curriculum is ambitious, coherent and inclusive, enabling all pupils to develop as confident, competent and physically literate individuals. We aim for all children to develop secure knowledge of movement, game play and healthy lifestyles, alongside the skills to apply, analyse and refine their performance, preparing them for the next stage of their education and for active lives beyond school.

Our curriculum is carefully structured to ensure that pupils build secure foundational knowledge of fundamental movement skills, including balance, coordination, agility and control, before applying these within increasingly complex and varied contexts. Through a well-sequenced approach, pupils revisit and refine these skills over time, developing increasing accuracy, control and tactical understanding across a broad range of activities, including games, gymnastics, dance and athletics.

Physical Education is taught as a distinct subject, where pupils develop subject-specific knowledge and skills, including rules, tactics and strategies. Lessons are designed to promote connections between skills and game situations, enabling pupils to make decisions, apply tactics and evaluate performance using appropriate subject-specific vocabulary. Through structured opportunities to practise, apply and refine, pupils learn to adapt their approach and improve their performance with increasing independence.

Our curriculum is underpinned by an inclusive approach in which all pupils are given access to challenging physical activity with appropriate support. Adaptive teaching, including modelling, breaking down skills into smaller steps and adjusting activities, ensures that barriers are removed without lowering expectations. This enables all pupils to engage fully, develop competence and build confidence in physical activity.

Opportunities for fluency are prioritised through repeated practice of key skills, ensuring movements become increasingly secure, efficient and automatic. Alongside this, pupils engage in meaningful problem-solving and tactical thinking, applying their knowledge to competitive and cooperative contexts. Pupils are taught to evaluate performance, justify decisions and refine their approach, developing a deeper understanding of how to achieve success in a range of activities.

Physical Education is meaningfully connected to the wider curriculum, enabling pupils to apply and deepen their understanding. Pupils use mathematical skills when measuring performance and analysing outcomes, and develop communication skills through coaching, feedback and evaluation. This supports pupils in making sense of their learning and applying it in purposeful contexts.

Our curriculum reflects a ‘windows and mirrors’ approach, where pupils experience a wide range of physical activities and sporting contexts that reflect both their own experiences and those beyond their immediate environment. This helps to ensure that Physical Education is inclusive, engaging and representative, while broadening pupils’ understanding of physical activity across cultures and communities.

We are committed to ensuring that all pupils access the full Physical Education curriculum. Through careful planning, consistent practice and ongoing refinement, we ensure that pupils develop competence, confidence and a secure understanding of movement and activity. High-quality PE provides pupils with the knowledge to move safely and efficiently and to make informed choices about their own health and wellbeing.

By the end of their time at Kempshott Junior School, pupils will be able to apply their knowledge and skills confidently, demonstrate tactical awareness, evaluate and improve performance, and participate successfully in a range of physical activities. They will leave as confident, independent learners who understand the value of physical activity and are equipped to lead active, healthy lives.
