Intent

At Kempshott Junior School we believe that Geography helps to develop children's curiosity in both their immediate surroundings and in places and environments in the wider world. Our purpose is to instil an interest, fascination and desire to investigate a variety of human and physical characteristics of different places, both local and afar, through purposeful research and careful questioning. To be well-rounded citizens, we believe children need to understand the differences between places and their cultures and how these change over time.

                                                                         Implementation

The Kempshott geography curriculum aims to look at key places in Europe, North and South America and making links with the local area enhancing their positional knowledge within the world. The curriculum will steadily progress to a more comprehensive coverage of the world so that pupils will be able to compare and contrast the key aspects of physical and human geographical differences.

This is implemented by posing an intriguing question at the start of every unit for the children to investigate whereby they will develop their geographical skills over a series of lessons. They will examine and be critical of primary and secondary sources, use maps and digital mapping software to identify similarities and differences over time and conduct fieldwork for locational knowledge.

The children will be expected to work collaboratively in groups or pairs to encourage and support where necessary. Discursive analysis will be used to facilitate the delivery of the content and to foster curiosity about the world. Final assessments will be used to identify the children’s understanding of a topic and can be submitted in a variety of means that best capture the children’s knowledge.

Impact

The impact of this will be evident through evidence gathered in their books, pupil voice; through discussion and feedback where children will talk enthusiastically about the world around them.

Pupils will be aware of the cultural and geographical changes that have and are happening around them and be able to understand why.

As children progress throughout the school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding an appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context. They will talk confidently about the impact of human and physical changes to their local environment and the wider world. As a result, the children are more likely to be aware of future issues (e.g. sustainability, migration, trading barriers) and have ideas for how to tackle them.
