Enjoy and Achieve

Here is a selection of the special events and activities that the children have been involved in recently:

Year 3

Windmill farm

Last term we went on a visit to Windmill Farm in relation to our Geography topic of Countrysides. Before our visit we studied the Countryside Code, which advises people on how to respect the countryside. This linked to the Rights for Every Child – Education should teach children to respect the natural environment. Article 29. At the farm we held and stroked lambs and even witnessed lambs being born. The children enjoyed the visit and wrote excellent reports of their experience and designed posters.

Orienteering

We were lucky enough to have a visitor who taught us about Orienteering. The children thoroughly enjoyed the activities provided and learned to read and orientate maps.

Celts and Romans

This term we are the studying the Celts and the Romans and the children have shown such an interest in the topic that they have been using their own time at home to research further.

As part of our history we are going to be visiting the ancient site of Silchester, alternatively known as Calleva Atrebatum and then moving on to visit Reading Museum, where the children will be looking at various Roman artefacts. In addition to this, we will be holding a Roman Day in school, where children will come in appropriate dress and will undertake many different activities.

Year 4

India week

Year 4 had a fantastic time during India week. The themed week gave the pupils the opportunity to get a flavour of India . Pupils got to experience visiting a Hindu Temple when Miss Reed transformed her classroom into one; food tasting, printing, designing and creating Indian patterns on bags, T-shirts and floor tiles that could be enjoyed by everyone outside Ash work area! They also got the chance to be taught a traditional Indian and Bollywood dance by Sushmita Patel from ‘Kala The Arts’ dance company who specialise in Indian dance.

The Tudors

Currently we are learning about life in Tudor times and important people. The children have designed and are in the process of making tudor carriages, having great fun choreographing traditional Tudor dance and re-enacting the Battle of Bosworth.

Visit from the Reverend

Reverend Taylor visited all of year 4 at the beginning of June to talk about the importance of the bible to Christians. The children generated some really interesting questions and gained a lot from his visit,

Literacy

In recent weeks we have been learning about persuasive writing. In our lessons we created smoothies using up to 3 fruits and then taste tested them! We recorded words which described the taste, texture and smell. We then made adverts in word and created short stop animation video clips using the Digi blues. Below are some examples. PE Kit

Remember that year five have P.E. lessons on Mondays and Thursdays - make sure that P.E. kits are in school on these days.

Science

Year 5 are currently enjoying an exciting space project which aims to extend their understanding of the solar system. Very creative homework projects are coming in thick and fast - we are really looking forward to the children's presentations!

Greek Week

In the spring term year five enjoyed participating in their very own 'Greek Week' which involved lots of learning about the culture and beliefs of the Ancient Greek civilization. The week culminated in an exciting visit from the Rainbow Theatre Company and an exquisite Greek feast!

Year 6  Climate Change Week

(18th - 22nd May 2009)

Following SATs, Year 6 enjoyed a week dedicated to learning about Climate Change.

They learned about the causes, effects and impact of climate change on our planet and its inhabitants.

They made a range of presentations including powerpoints, posters and leaflets.

Year 6 really enjoyed this week; it made them focus on how what we do in our homes can have an impact on the lives of others around the world.

Please refer to our Gallery for some pictures of work produced and comments made by the children.
